Reitan Retail’s REMA 1000 Denmark to acquire majority of ALDI’s Danish grocery store network
Discount grocer REMA 1000 Denmark, part of Reitan Retail, has signed an agreement to acquire the majority of German discount grocer ALDI’s grocery store network in Denmark.
- REMA 1000 Denmark will acquire 114 store locations and three distribution centers, including a portfolio of real estate locations.
- The deal gives access to attractive locations, well-suited for the REMA 1000 format, paving the way for accelerated growth in an attractive market.
- The agreement excludes ALDI’s head office and remaining stores in Denmark.
- The transaction is subject to approval by Danish competition authorities.
“REMA 1000 Denmark has been a fantastic growth story, demonstrating the scalability and growth potential of our business model,” says Reitan Retail CEO Ole Robert Reitan. “The agreement with ALDI is an important step in Reitan Retail’s strategy to strengthen our position, renew and develop our portfolio and contribute to sustainable and profitable growth,” he says.
Henrik Burkal, CEO of REMA 1000 Denmark, says the agreement marks an important milestone for REMA 1000, which entered the Danish market in 1994.
“Together with our franchisees, we are very close to the local customer, and we run the most efficient operations, enabling us to offer very good value for money,” says Burkal. “This acquisition provides us with the possibility to establish more REMA 1000 stores at attractive locations, with high-quality products at low prices.”
Upon completion, the acquired portfolio would complement and improve REMA 1000’s existing store network, accelerate growth and boost market share, in line with Reitan Retail’s strategy. REMA 1000 would implement the Reitan Format Franchise Model, aiming to boost operational efficiency, sales per store and profitability.
“I’m pleased to see the REMA 1000 format expanding, based on strong values, efficient operations and local ownership,” says Odd Reitan, the founder of REMA 1000 and CEO of REITAN AS, which owns Reitan Retail. “ALDI’s discount philosophy was a great inspiration to the first REMA store, which opened in Trondheim in 1979, and is still ingrained in the way we do business across REITAN.”
