Danish competition authorities approves REMA 1000 Denmark's Aldi acquisition

Danish competition authorities have today approved REMA 1000's acquisition of 114 stores in Denmark from the German discount grocery chain ALDI. The agreement gives REMA 1000 Denmark access to attractive locations that are well suited for the REMA 1000 concept.

"The agreement is a milestone, which illustrates the power of our business model," says Ole Robert Reitan, CEO of Reitan Retail, of which REMA 1000 is a part. The first REMA 1000 store opened in Trondheim in 1979 and was the first grocery chain to operate with franchise as an organisational form. REMA 1000 opened its first stores in Denmark in 1994 and has since grown.

"When my father started REMA 1000, he was greatly inspired by ALDI. The fact that we are now completing this deal is therefore of extra significance for us,” says Ole Robert Reitan.

The acquired portfolio will complement and improve REMA 1000's existing store network, contribute to growth and increased market share, in line with Reitan Retail's strategy. REMA 1000 will introduce Reitan Retail's unique franchise model, with the goal of improved efficiency, store turnover and profitability.

REMA 1000 Denmark is a business area in Reitan Retail, a Nordic and Baltic retailer with 43,500 employees and 3,800 outlets in seven countries. The company has well-known brands such as 7-Eleven, Narvesen, Pressbyån, R-kioski and Uno-X, in addition to REMA 1000 in Norway and Denmark.
